Radwanska Is So Light On Her Feet, She Is Playing Ninja Tennis
There are some players that never really make headlines, but are always sort of there. Agniezska “Aga” Radwanska, was one of those players. It’s strange to me how this could be, because anyone who has ever seen her play knows that she is far from mundane. In a time when even women’s tennis has become a ball-bashing, serve-crushing, error-filled slugfest, it’s refreshing to see a player who uses wit above all else gain an upper hand.
To many in the tennis-loving community, Aga’s most widely used nickname is “ninja.” She is a slight, calm, and smart player who isn’t going to be turning heads with things like mphs. It takes a bit of effort, watching her play a point or two, to see the true brilliance of her game. In the final against Vera Zvonareva, a two-time grand slam finalist who was certainly the favorite entering the match and a more than formidable opponent, Aga simply was the more patient and more thoughtful of the two.
Radwanska moves around the court quietly but swiftly and her ability to anticipate is something that even Mr. Miyagi would be jealous of. A gifted doubles player, she is a master of nearly every shot in the book and is one of the few players who actually uses them in matches. At any moment, and from anywhere on the court, she can hit a pass, dropshot, lob, roll, crosscourt, down the line, topsin, flat, you name it, she’s got it. ESPN commentator Pam Shriver even commented that watching just one of her service games could be used to make an entire DVD on shot-making.
In true ninja fashion, she carries herself around the court with an almost detached regard for what is happening in front of her. You never know if she’s winning or losing. Heck, you never know if she even wants to be there. If you’re lucky, you may get the tiniest of fist pumps out of her, but not much beyond that. To give you an idea of exactly how cool as a cucumber she plays, take a moment to look at her reaction when her racquet literally flew off its handle at this year’s Australian open: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DptKbqqO1EY.
Women’s tennis is entering an awkward transition where more and more players are focusing on power and fitness over touch and finesse. Aga Radwanska didn’t get that memo, and it’s good to have players like her around just because they’re just plain fun to watch. She brings variety to the game and reminds us that tennis players need not be the strongest or the fastest, but with patience and smarts you can come out on top.
Na pierwszy rzut oka to jakiś absurd. To raczej Szarapowa, Bartoli lub Serena sprawiają na korcie wrażenie wojowniczek(masywne sylwetki, grożne miny, tupnięcia, mordercze spojrznia, potęzne returny),ale to Aga robi większe wrazenie przez kontrast
miedzy kruchością ciała a zacietościa gry
Aga jest na ich tle takim"cichym mordercą"
